Las Vegas Police Officer Charged in Series of Casino Robberies

(Reno Gazette Journal) Federal prosecutors in Nevada have charged a Las Vegas police officer with robbing three casinos of nearly $165,000.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department arrested one of its own, 33-year-old Caleb Mitchell Rogers, on Feb. 27 after an armed robbery at the Rio hotel-casino just east of the Strip.

Rogers was charged five days later in Nevada U.S. District Court with one count each of interference with commerce by robbery and brandishing a firearm during a violent crime.

A judge ordered him held without bail pending trial duringĀ his initial court appearance Thursday afternoon in Las Vegas.

According to the complaint, Rogers was arrested during the final robbery in the series after at least one casino employee triggered an alarm.

A security guardĀ tackled RogersĀ as he ran toward the Rio hotel-casino parking garage, prompting the LVMPD officer to draw a silver revolver, according to the complaint.Ā 

With his finger on the trigger, the complaint alleges, Rogers threatened to shoot the guard.

Casino securityĀ was eventually able to detain Rogers until Las Vegas police arrived.
