How Google Skews the News

(Dmytro “Henry” AleksandrovHeadline USA) A recent study revealed that Google News was heavily skewed in favor of leftist media outlets in five of the days leading up to the 2022 midterm elections.

“Imbalanced or heavily biased news search results can have a negative impact on our democracy and elections,” Julie Mastrine, director of marketing and media bias ratings at AllSides, the organization that performed the study, told the Daily Signal.

“When people cannot access the full range of views on political and societal issues, they are subject to partisan manipulation and cannot truly decide for themselves.”

AllSides, a media company that is dedicated to presenting balanced news and diverse perspectives to the public, analyzed the Google News homepage and search results from Oct. 31 to Nov. 4, 2022, checking them alongside their media bias chart.

According to the results of the study, 61% of media outlets that appeared on Google News’ homepage were politically on the left, 25% were centrist sources and only 3% of news coverage was conservative.

The homepage heavily featured CNN, the New York TimesPoliticoNBC News, The Guardian, the Washington Post and CBS News.

AllSides also analyzed Google News search results on six specific search terms, almost all of which showed overwhelmingly leftist results: “Trump,” 88%, “Election,” 96%, “Biden,” 68% and “Abortion,” 88%. “Crime,” 36%, and “Economy,” 48%, were the only results where conservative news sources were in the majority.
